Abstract
The purpose of this study were to develop urinary incontinence self management program for community elderly women and to evaluate the effect of the program application and subjects¢¥ satisfaction toward the program. The program was developed by literature review and author¢¥s experience from the previous study. The program consisted of 4 weeks of group education which includes anatomy and physiology of urinary system, healthy life style for continence, reproductive system and pelvic exercise training. In order to evaluate the effect of the program, 9 weeks of research was carried out. Eighteen elderly incontinent women were recruited from the two senior citizen centers of the two churches in the community. For the first 4 weeks of baseline data collection period, general health promotion education was given to the subjects. For the next 4 weeks, subjects were given incontinence self management education program. Data were collected three times, before the health promotion education (week 1), before the incontinence self management education (Week 5), and after the education (Week 9). Subjective report of incontinence were significantly decreased between the Week 5 and Week 9 (p = .014) according to Repeated Measure ANOVA result. There was no significant difference in self esteem in between different times. Subjects¢¥ evaluation of the over all program was satisfactory. Recommendations for future study were made 1) to apply control group design, 2) to apply for objective measurement of incontinence, and 3) to test the effect of self help group following the urinary incontinence self management education program.
